Pet photo guide

I can't stress enough the importance of choosing the perfect photo for the portrait of your pet.  Choosing a high quality  photo will ensure you get the most out of your portrait.  The higher quality reference photo provided, the better your portrait will be in terms of detail.

The best photos to choose should have these following qualities:

 *High resolution

*Soft Lighting

 *Focused

*Clarity

The photo should show details such as nose texture, accurate coat colour, the direction the fur grows and catchlight in the eyes.  These make all those details easy to see when zoomed in.  These details are lost with an image with lower resolution.

  1. QUALITY:  Digital DSLR cameras take the best pictures, but the newer mobile devices are capable as well for taking high quality photos.  Whichever route you take just ensure that the resolution is set to high and the lens is clean and unscratched.  Always send the photos in their original size, this make all those details easy to see when zoomed in.  Never use any filters on the photo as this can change the original colours in your picture.
  2. AVOID FLASH:  When using the flash it often creates red eye effects in the animals eye and bright flares.  It can also make harsh shadows within the fur.
  3. LIGHTING:  Natural lighting is your best friend when taking your photo. Cloudy days are better then sunny as the sun can cast harsh shadows and make those details hard to see.  Make sure your light source, be the sun or bright window is behind you and that your pet is facing the light.  This is the best way to catch that beautiful reflection in their eyes!
  4. ANGLE:  Eye level is the best view for portraits of your pet.   So getting low and making sure the camera is at eye level with your animal.   Getting them to look at you rather than up at you is always a better angle.  A great way to get their attention is treats!  Have someone hold the treat by your shoulder when your are taking your photo!
  5. PERSONALITY:  Try to think about what kind of portrait you are looking for. Whether it's a quirky unusual pose that is reflective of your pet's character or a side angle pose, or eye level, these all work well for a portrait. Essentially you are choosing the photo that best reflects your pet's personality and uniqueness.
  6. SELECTION:  Take a bunch of pictures and then choose the best ones.  Send them to me in the highest resolution so I can get a feel for your pet.  I'm always happy to offer my advice in choosing the best picture for your portrait!
